Patan Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Site): Also known as Lalitpur. Located 6 km south from Kathmandu city and is situated in the center of Patan city. The city is surrounded by 4 Stupas as 4 corners of Patan, one at each corner of its cardinal points. These stupas are said to have been built by the famous Emperor Ashoka. This whole square is a cluster of fine pagoda temples and stone statues. Most of the monuments of Patan Durbar Square were built in the 17th century. The ancient palace of the Malla kings and the stone baths associated with various legends and episodes of history are especially interesting to visitors.
The main attractions of Patan Durbar Square are: Krishna Temple (which is devoted to Lord Krishna) is one of the best examples of stone architecture in Nepal, Taleju Temple, Bhimsen Temple and Patan Museum. There are three main courtyards in the palace which are also main attractions: Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk.
The other attraction in Patan is Gold Temple: It is also known as Hiranya Varna Mahavihar and located just north of Patan Durbar Square. This temple was built in 1409 and it is a historical Buddhist monastery.
