Lo-Manthang (3840m): is an ancient Himalayan Kingdom which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of the Kaligandaki River, in the upper Mustang Region. The settlement is surrounded by a 6-meter high earthen wall with square towers or dzong on the corners.The medieval walled village of Lo Manthang is inhabited by around 1000 people. The village is popular for its high mud walls, the Royal Palace, Gompas, monasteries of Jampa Lakhang, Thupchen Lakhang from the 15th Century and Choede Lakhang from the 18th Century.
The Upper Mustang region is classified as a “restricted area”, and much of the region, including trekking trails, also lies within the Annapurna circuit. Foreigners cannot enter Upper Mustang without a “restricted area permit”. So Foreigners are required to obtain a Restricted Area Permit in addition to an ACAP entry permit to trek in Upper Mustang.
