KUMBUM STUPA AND PELKOR CHODE MONASTERY

Kumbum Stupa: The famous Kumbum, a combination of pagoda and stupa arts. The famous Kumbum pagoda, built in collaboration with Newari artists from Nepal & Tibetan artisits, also stands in the same courtyard with nine storeys, 108 doors and 77 chapels containing clay sculptures and various murals. The pagoda is said to have 100,000 images, either sculptured or painted, this is the reason for its name “100,000 Image Pagoda”

Pelkor Chode Monastery: This monastery is the next door monument to the Kumbum. It was founded in 1418. Its role is unique on the Buddhism in Tibet as it represents all the three sects of Tibetan Buddhism: Gelugpa, Sakkyapa and Bhuton.
